Everything you need to know about GLP-1s
This weekly injection pen is a GLP-1 medication, a class of treatments for diabetes that mimic the natural GLP-1 hormone released after eating to also help patients lose weight.
Its active ingredient, semaglutide, has been shown to reduce hunger, cut food cravings, improve control of eating and lower preference for high-fat foods, helping you eat fewer calories which leads to weight loss.
This treatment mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone to help regulate blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for both weight and glucose management. It also suppresses appetite, slows digestion and helps you feel fuller for longer.
GLP-1 treatments start working straight away, but most people begin noticing visible changes after the first few weeks. In clinical studies, patients saw steady and meaningful progress as their dose increased:
By Month 1: around 2–3% weight loss
By Month 3: around 5–7% weight loss
By Month 6: around 10–12% weight loss
By 12 Months: around 14–15% weight loss

This medication is usually prescribed for adults with a BMI of 23 or higher with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, or PCOS.

Each pen contains four once-weekly doses and includes a built-in flow check before every use. After the fourth dose, the pen automatically locks to prevent access to any remaining liquid. You’ll receive a new pen every four weeks to keep your treatment on schedule.
Your GLP-1 dose is increased gradually to help your body adjust and maximise weight loss.
If you’re responding well at a lower dose, you can stay there, it’s about finding the level that works best for you.

The most common side effects are mild to moderate stomach symptoms such as nausea, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation. These usually occur when your dose increases and tend to settle over time.
This GLP-1 treatment is a once-weekly self-injection. After preparing the pen and checking the flow, inject into the abdomen, thighs, or upper arms, rotating sites each time. For upper-arm injections, it’s best to have someone assist.
